Profile Information

What does 'sustainability' mean to you?
Not using more than my share of the resources of the world. However, this is not realistic. So we are doing all that is practical.

What do you do to try and live green and what would you like to learn more about?
As much as we have done with our house, just by driving we are taking far more than our share.
We try to only drive into town once a week, our car does 32 mpg as we have to have a 4WD vehicle.
(We have decided to drive below 65mph and found we are now getting 34mpg!).
We have changed to vegetarian meals at home as beef production uses so much corn and we have started to bake our own bread, make our own yogurt.
But my wife has to visit her Dad (nursing home) in the UK once in a while and the airline flight blows the whole deal!
What concerns you most about the issues facing the environment, whether locally or globally?
Will we make the changes soon enough?
The Germans are making huge strides with PV panels going up everywhere. They have a progressive government that has worked out a way to make it financially feasible. We need to teach why the "Commons" is important.
Do you have a Web site?

GLENHAVEN - our Earthship in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

The building of our Earthship - Glenhaven - is on the website:

Below is our living room & kitchen, you can also see the planter that runs along the south wall behind the south-facing glass.
Water all comes from our roof (we store about 6,000 gallons), electricity all comes from a 3 kilowatt PV system, our hot water comes from a roof mounted solar heater. But our cooking is by propane gas. We also have a back-up flash gas water heater.
Our kitchen has everything; 20 cu. ft. fridge/freezer, dishwasher, trash compactor & gas cook stove. All run off solar.
Our heat is solar/geo thermal with one small modern wood stove. Lighting is with compact fluorescents and LED lamps.
Waste; all our grey-water goes into the planter and our sewage is handled by a modern electric powered composting toilet.
All our entertainment is by computer via wireless broadband, no TV, no radio. The house has no physical mechanical connexions to the outside world.
And this house cost much less then the median priced stick-built house.
We are happy to answer questions. email: graham.bowkett AT gmail.com

A Self-Fulfilling Prophecy

If you think preventing climate change is politically difficult, look at the political problems of adapting to it.

By George Monbiot. Published in the Guardian, 16th March 2009.

Quietly in public, loudly in private, climate scientists everywhere are saying the same thing: it’s over. The years in which more than two degrees of global warming could have been prevented have passed, the opportunities squandered… Continue

Water

I will explain my attitude to H2O.

The stupidest thing I can think of is using drinking water to flush human feces down a drain to be reprocessed. Into what? Being a student of permaculture, I believe there is no waste and no away; flushing "waste" "away" is impossible and thus wrong to begin with. Almost every house has grey-water, water that has been used for washing ourselves, our dishes or our clothes. With a bit of simple plumbing and natural filtering, that water can be used to… Continue

Imagine:- GM & MILITARY INDUSTRIAL GIANTS TO BUILD HIGH-SPEED RAIL SYSTEM.

GENERAL MOTORS are good at building large vehicles that are too large for a sensible fleet of road going people movers. They suck gas.

The brains of America (and many immigrants from foreign universities) are employed by the likes of GE-NBC & Bechtel in the military industrial complex, working away on ideas to kill people via fighter aircraft, drones and modern electronic devices. Why waste these brains? Let's re-employ them to design the… Continue

Hi Graham, and thanks for your comment. My videographer also does video for the Bioneers, so between now and the conference is his busy season. I will try to release audio podcasts until he gets back in late october. Great to know you are listening, and I'll try to get back to regular releases next week.

Take care, - Mark
