What does 'sustainability' mean to you?
Broadly speaking, sustainability is about striking a balance with nature. Sustainable, as an interior designer, to me means balancing the three “Fs. ” These are "form" and "function," the basic elements of design balanced with building practices that "feasibly" take into consideration aspects such as: impact to the environment, indoor air quality, energy efficiencies, use of materials that are non-toxic and recyclable.
What do you do to try and live green and what would you like to learn more about?
We live in a small space and try to practice green living in small ways. For example, we lack the room to store waste for recycling so I try to avoid food products in cans or plastic. A local brand of organic milk that comes in a reusable glass bottle is always my first choice. Buying fresh produce, instead of fruit and vegetables packaged in plastic bags or containers, is another small way to make a big impact.
In our tiny kitchen, I try to keep countertops free of small appliances -- I only take them out of the cupboard and plug them in when I need them. It provide better space and saves boatloads of energy. Did you know that keeping electronics such as cell phones, small appliances, radios, alarm clocks, etcetera plugged in account for more energy waste than any other single source in residential spaces?
Again, making small changes in our "living habits" can have a big impact.
I work with my neighbor, owner of BusyBodies, to publish a quarterly newsletter for her personal concierge service company and applaud her for including information that addresses "green living." The website I list belongs to Leslie. Our last issue, "Your Green Concierge" includes a interview with Daniel Stih of HealthyLivingSpaces.com and an article "Dirty Little Green Secrets" with recipes for cleaning products that save the planet while saving you hundreds of dollars a year in cleaning products.
What concerns you most about the issues facing the environment, whether locally or globally?
My greatest concern is renewal energy. We have technologies that are under-utilized and under-developed. Wind and solar, for example, should be primary sources here in New Mexico and other states including Texas, Arizona, southern California. We could be self-sufficient and providers (using our excess) to other states.
We should be electing public officials that support development of renewable energy technologies that, for example, solve the problem of storing wind and solar energy.

"Hold That Mold Please"

It's been over a year (since April 2008) that I suffered from diminished health caused by what I now know is mold poisoning. Currently, my domestic partner and have relocated with our home is undergoing mold remediation. Our temporary digs appear to be mold free but we're not taking any chances. We're purchased an expensive but necessary high performance HEPA air cleaning system, IQ made by a Swiss company. My health is improving but, still, I'm not feeling 100%. Today, for example, I called in… Continue
