"I have an unwavering sense to protect the community and traditions that my ancestors started. "

The Rio Grande Sun feature article pasted below is written strongly in favor of the opposition to the development of a retreat on the Chimayo Potrero. The many comments reinforce. In the article, Gil Martinez, the developer, makes the statement that the Church will provide no funding-- well that maybe true, if one considers "no funding" the deeding of land FREE OF COST to the foundation. The expected deeding of land from the Church to the foundation indicates an extremely high level of fiscal…See More

The Chimayo development group, Jardin de Ninos Foundation, which does not yet have its charter, proposes the development of an 11,000 square foot, 25-room new retreat complex that will include the remodel of several existing historic structures that are in excess of 100 years old and are within the immediate context of the historic Santuario de Chimayo, a State and Nationally registered cultural/historic property and  Historic National Landmark. This context includes the historic portrero de…See More

Chimayo Citizens Say No to Conference Center Development

Among the more vibrant testimonies of the CCCP meeting last night, was that of a young mother who recalled with passionate clarity her childhood days playing in the portrero, and how her 7-year old child now was not so fortunate-- even as the Chimayo Boys and Girls Club cuts staff and relaxes maintenance because of budget shortfalls. Not once, she stated, in her life did the Church rise to the occasion of helping her or her peers, and never have the Church or the people organizing the Jardins…See More

Santuario de Chimayo National Historic Landmark Threatened

I thank Tom Sharpe for his December 22 SF New Mexican article, and David Snow, Historian, for bringing this important issue to light on January 15 and initiating public and professional involvement in it.  As I look at the drawings of the proposed development, I am appalled that any plans such as this have gotten so far without more public input.  The plans include construction of 4 two-story buildings that will bracket the 200-plus year old Santuario de Chimayo National  Historic Landmark…See More

Profile Information

What does 'sustainability' mean to you?
economically viable preservation and reuse
What do you do to try and live green and what would you like to learn more about?
reuse and preservation of historic resources. On daily walks I follow my dad's example by always picking up some of the multitudes of loose trash in the Santa Fe streets and sidewalks, and discarding it in the appropriate place. My dad recycled his newspaper delivery bags for this purpose. Why not print a "suggested mandate" on the plastic delivery bags for this purpose?
What concerns you most about the issues facing the environment, whether locally or globally?
lack of apolitical oversight over local historic resources, which is exacerbated by often personally biased, incomplete media reporting by the New Mexican.
